Product Overview: Conquer Winter Ice with the Scott Aerator Floating De-Icer
Winter's icy grip can wreak havoc on your pond, threatening aquatic life and damaging valuable boats, docks, and boathouses. For over 45 years, Scott Aerator Company has been the trusted name in reliable, efficient, and exceptionally durable de-icers, ensuring your surfaces remain safely ice-free.
Introducing the Scott Aerator Floating De-Icer – your ultimate solution for maintaining vital open water areas in larger bodies of water all winter long. Engineered to suspend approximately 2 feet below the surface, this powerful unit continuously draws warmer water from the depths, effectively melting existing ice and preventing new ice formation. Its rugged construction is built to withstand the harshest conditions in both freshwater and saltwater environments, effortlessly adapting to fluctuating water levels.
Experience unparalleled performance with the Scott Aerator Floating De-Icer. By constantly circulating warmer deep water, this device actively melts and prevents ice buildup. Its heavy-duty build is ideal for both fresh and saltwater applications, and it seamlessly adjusts to changing water levels.
Key Features & Benefits:
-
Oil-Free Operation: Unlike competitor models requiring messy, frequent oil changes and prone to leaks, our De-Icer is completely oil-free. This innovative design guarantees reliable performance across all water temperatures, saving you time and maintenance headaches.
-
Superior Water Movement: Operating at a powerful 3450 rpm, this De-Icer dramatically outperforms competitors typically running below 2000 rpm. While others might move a mere 180 gallons per minute, the Scott Aerator De-Icer boasts an impressive circulation rate of 400 gallons per minute, ensuring maximum ice prevention.
-
Built to Last with American Stainless Steel: The motor is proudly constructed from high-quality, American-made stainless steel, offering superior corrosion resistance and longevity compared to competitors who often use less durable galvanized metal.
-
Unbeatable 5-Year Motor Warranty: We stand behind the quality of our De-Icer with an unrestricted five-year motor warranty. Competing units typically offer only a limited two-year warranty, giving you peace of mind and long-term value.
Easy Setup Guide
1. Simple Unit Assembly
Assembling your Scott Aerator Floating De-Icer is quick and easy, taking approximately 15-20 minutes. Detailed instructions are included with your unit. The kit contains:
- Pump with durable cylindrical housing and attached power cord
- Sturdy square float platform
- Protective stainless steel screen
- Decorative nozzle (Note: Not applicable for the DA-20 model)
- High-quality 5/16"x2" stainless steel bolts
- Corrosion-resistant stainless steel nuts & washers
- Reliable self-tapping stainless steel screws
Required Tools: You will need a wrench (or socket driver) and pliers.

Assembly Steps:
- Place the fountain housing on a stable surface with the pump outlet facing upward.
- Attach durable nylon rope (not included) to the two stainless steel eyebolts for secure anchoring.
- Position the float and firmly fasten it using the provided 5/16" x 2" bolts, washers, and nuts.
- Carefully flip the fountain over, remove the Styrofoam ring, and install the robust stainless steel filter, aligning the pre-drilled holes with the filter's marks. Secure the filter with the three self-tapping screws provided.
2. Optional Light Attachment (Skip if no lights were ordered)
Easily enhance your de-icer with Scott Aerator fountain light kits, designed for simple attachment to the square float platform. Light kits include:
- (2) or (4) bright LED light fixtures with power cord
- Durable 1/2" bolts & nuts
- (2) or (4) sturdy stainless steel arm brackets
- Convenient timer/control unit
- Remote control (included with color-changing lights only)
Required Tools: Wrench & Pliers
*Important Note: The included timer/control unit is essential for operating the lights and protecting your warranty. Do not disconnect the cord from the control unit, as this will void the warranty.
Assembly Steps:
- Attach each arm assembly to the water feature, ensuring the arms are positioned with the "L" facing up. Remove one of the 2" bolts securing the float to your Scott water feature and align the holes with the stainless steel arm. Reinsert the bolt with washer through the housing, float, and stainless steel arm. Secure with washer and nut. Repeat for the remaining arm assemblies.
- Attach each light to the slotted end of the stainless steel arms. Insert a 1/2" x 1/4" bolt downward through each light bracket and steel arm, then secure with a 1/4" nut. The lights can be easily adjusted along the arm by loosening the lock nut, repositioning the light, and re-tightening the nut.
- Connect the lights to the Timer Control Unit by aligning the pins and twisting the connector together 1/2 turn only. Avoid forcing the connection to prevent damage to the O-ring or wiring.
3. Effortless Placement in Water
- Once assembled, your Scott Aerator Floating De-Icer is ready for placement in the water for final adjustments and anchoring.
- Handle the unit with care; avoid resting its weight on the stainless steel filter to prevent damage.
- Once the fountain head is submerged, secure it by screwing it into place (Note: Not applicable for the DA-20).
- Float the de-icer to your desired location and secure the attached nylon ropes to the shore or use two concrete blocks submerged at least 20 feet apart for stable anchoring.
- Finally, connect your de-icer and lights (if applicable) to your power source. Always use a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) for safety and consult a licensed electrician for professional installation.
Selection Guide: Find Your Perfect Scott Aerator Solution
Choosing the Right Motor Size
- Horsepower directly influences the size and flow rate of your fountain's spray pattern. Higher horsepower translates to greater water movement and larger or denser spray displays.
- Selecting the ideal horsepower depends on your budget and the size of your pond. A helpful guideline is to maintain at least 10 feet between the fountain spray and the pond's edge to prevent water loss.
Choosing the Correct Voltage
- If you are unsure about voltage, please contact us for expert guidance.
- If using 115V power at the pond's edge, carefully consider the maximum distances from the pump to the breaker (including the power cord length) to ensure optimal performance.
- For 230V systems, distance is generally not a significant concern, offering greater flexibility in placement.

Choosing LED Lights (Optional Enhancement)
- Add stunning illumination to your water feature! Light kits can be purchased now or easily added later. Light sets effortlessly attach to the float platform.
- Lights operate on 110V and come with their own dedicated power cord for simple connection.
- Choose from elegant single-color warm white LED lights or dynamic color-changing LED lights to create the perfect ambiance.
- Both options include a programmable timer for convenient operation, and the color-changing lights come with a remote control effective up to an impressive 1,000 feet away.
- 2-light sets are recommended for 1 HP and below.
- 3-light sets are recommended for 1.5 HP and 2 HP.
- 4-light sets are recommended for 3 HP.
Choosing Timers (Optional Convenience)
- Automate your fountain's operation! Timers can be purchased now or added later.
- Note: Timers are designed solely for controlling fountains, not lights.
- FAQ: The key difference between the residential and commercial 230V timer is the enclosure material: the residential box is durable plastic, while the commercial box is robust metal. Both perform the same reliable function.
Additional Nozzles (Optional Customization)
- Can't decide on a single look? Scott Aerator fountain pumps are compatible with all Scott Aerator nozzles, allowing you to change your spray pattern whenever you like!
- Choose from 9 unique nozzles to create a variety of stunning spray patterns and customize your water feature's appearance!
- Important Note: Not all nozzles are available for every motor size. Ensure you select nozzles that are compatible with your chosen horsepower for optimal performance.

Common Questions & Expert Answers
Fountains
Q: How do I select the appropriate fountain for my pond?
A: This is a frequent and important question! First, determine your primary goal: aeration, aesthetics, or both. If aeration is your priority, explore our Aerating Fountains, which are designed to move more water than decorative fountains. For aesthetics, we offer a variety of options to suit your personal preference. Always ensure your pond meets the minimum depth requirements and that the spray display will not extend beyond the pond's boundaries. Detailed display dimensions are provided on each fountain product page for easy reference.
Note: Fountains can effectively aerate water up to approximately 6 feet deep.
Q: What horsepower should I choose for my fountain?
A: Horsepower indicates the motor size, which directly impacts the size and height of the spray pattern. It's crucial to ensure your pond is deep enough and that the spray will not reach the edges, regardless of the horsepower you choose. Our fountains are best suited for ponds a quarter acre or larger, depending on the pond's shape. Consider your budget and desired visual impact when making your horsepower selection.
Q: Should I hire someone to install my fountain?
A: If you do not currently have a power source installed near the pond, we highly recommend consulting a licensed electrician to handle that aspect. Once the power source is ready, our fountains are designed for relatively simple installation. Many customers successfully choose to install their own fountains to save on costs, but consider your available resources and comfort level with electrical work.
Q: Which voltage is better for me: 110-120V or 210-240V?
A: 210-240 volts is generally the preferred option, especially if the power source is located more than 70 feet from the main breaker. Ensure your power source is capable of supporting the higher voltage to provide sufficient power for continuous and reliable operation. Choosing a lower voltage may result in intermittent operation or inadequate performance if the pond is too far from the main breaker. Please contact us with any questions regarding voltage selection.
Q: Are lights included in the price of the fountain?
A: No, lights are not included by default. You have the option to order them with your fountain or at a later time. Attaching them to the floating unit is straightforward and a worthwhile investment to enhance your water feature's beauty, especially at night.
Q: What factors determine the cost of the power cord?
A: Material costs are a significant factor in power cord pricing. We offer a variety of power cords for our fountains, ranging from 14-gauge copper or stainless steel wire to heavy-duty 4-gauge copper or stainless steel wire, depending on the fountain size and the required cord length.
Q: Is it okay to leave my fountain in the water during winter?
A: Yes, Scott Aerator Fountains are designed to operate throughout the winter months. You can choose to run them continuously to maintain open water or turn them off completely. Once the ice melts, they can be easily restarted.
Aerators
Q: Can aeration improve my fish's health and clean my pond?
A: Absolutely! Aeration is the crucial initial step in improving pond clarity, promoting a healthy ecosystem, and significantly benefiting your fish's health by increasing dissolved oxygen levels.
Q: How do I choose the correct aerator for my pond?
A: The size and depth of your pond are the primary factors guiding your aerator selection. Our website conveniently categorizes products based on pond size (in acres) to help you find the right fit. Surface Aerators and Aerating Fountains are ideal for ponds less than six feet deep, while Sub-Surface aerators are highly recommended for deeper ponds to ensure oxygen reaches the bottom.
Q: How do I install my aerator?
A: If a power source is not yet installed near the pond, we strongly advise consulting a licensed electrician. Our aerators are designed for easy installation once the power source is ready. Many customers successfully install the equipment themselves to save money, but consider your resources and comfort level with electrical work.
Q: How should I set up the optimal aeration system?
A: For comprehensive aeration, an optimal setup often includes a surface aerator or aerating fountain combined with a Sub-Surface aerator. This combination ensures thorough circulation and oxygenation throughout the entire water column, from the surface to the bottom.
